How to Mix and Laminate with surfset® epoxy - without the headaches

If you’ve ever worked with epoxy, you’ll know that the magic is in the prep work. Get it right, and everything flows smoothly. Skip a step, and… well, let’s just say you’ll be peeling resin off places you didn’t plan on.

Whether you’re tackling your first lamination or just brushing up, here’s a simple breakdown of how to mix and apply Surfset® epoxy like a pro.

Mixing Made Simple

First things first - set up your workspace. Gloves? Check. Safety glasses? Check. Good ventilation? Absolutely. Make sure you’ve got your mixing containers, clean stir sticks, and some solvent or cleaner nearby before you even crack open the resin. Trust me, scrambling for tools mid-mix is no fun.

Now, when it comes to ratios, you’ve got two options:

By weight: 100 parts resin to 44 parts hardener

By volume: 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener

Whichever method you pick, scrape every last drop from your measuring containers into your main mixing cup—those ratios only work if you actually get all the material in there.

Once everything’s in the same pot, stir thoroughly. Scrape the sides, scrape the bottom, and don’t rush it. A clean stick or tongue depressor works perfectly here. Think smooth and steady—not a milkshake speed-blend.

Laying It Down

Here’s where it gets satisfying. Pour your mixed resin straight onto the cloth and spread it out until the whole board surface is covered. Don’t forget to pull some resin onto the laps to wet them out too.

Give it a moment to soak in, then grab a stiff plastic squeegee. Use it to push out air bubbles, smooth the cloth, and scrape away any excess resin. While you’re at it, flatten down the rails and clean up those laps. A little patience here makes a big difference in your finish.

A Few Things to Remember

Working with Surfset® epoxy is all about planning and consistency. Keep these tips in your back pocket:

  • Keep it clean and safe - gloves, glasses, fresh air.
  • Get your ratios right and mix thoroughly.
  • Have all your tools and cleaners ready before you start.
  • Think through the process before you dive in - it’ll save you stress later.
  • And of course, check the Surfset® Safety Data Sheet before use.

That’s it! With a bit of prep and a steady hand, you’ll have a smooth lamination and a much easier cleanup.
